I’m coming back to the heart of worship / And it’s all about you, it’s all about YOU, Jesus.
I’m sorry, LORD, for the thing I’ve made it / When it’s all about YOU, it’s all about YOU, Jesus…
This is the hook to a praise song by Michael W. Smith (I believe), but I’ve heard it sung many times by various artists (like John Tesh, for example). The bottom line is, this song is very relevant considering what I have been noticing on other blogs of late.
There seems to be a common complaint about ’seeker-sensitive’ churches which water down the Gospel of Salvation through Jesus Christ or totally take it out of its context and make it carnal, to appeal to the flesh, instead of to the Spirit. The complaints as of recent that I’ve noticed focus on the so-called ‘praise and worship’ songs some of these churches sing. There are horrid examples out there, but the worst ones involve the church actually singing a worldly song (not a hymn or gospel song) and just switching out a word/ name for the name of Jesus. One example I saw didn’t even go that far — the worship leader just sung the song (from a popular TV show that has nothing to do with Salvation through Jesus Christ) straight…as you’d hear it on MTV.
How do songs like that fit into the Church? The Church is because of Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ IS the Church… so if the lyrics don’t reflect that … that’s not a song in honor or praise of the LORD Jesus Christ or GOD the FATHER.
As Mr. Smith sings, “I’ll bring you more than a song, for a song in itself is not what YOU have required…”
So, if we’re singing just to sing or to make someone feel good (or guilty), we’re not worshiping in Spirit and in truth. Praise and worship songs, the old-time hymns and gospel songs… they weren’t written so the ones singing them can feel good. They are for us to make a joyful noise unto the LORD. They are to remind us and encourage us to cling to Christ Jesus. They are to bring honor, blessing and glory to the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY. After all, we don’t gather in fellowship to worship each other. Everything we do and say should go back to the FATHER, right?
Personally, some of my favorite praise and worship songs are ‘Blessed Assurance,’ ‘The Old Rugged Cross,’ ‘I Am Determined To Hold Out To The End’ and ‘I Must Tell Jesus.’ These are just a few of my favorites. Please feel free to share your own.
